What’s your FAVOURITE BOOK (English)?

What’s your FAVOURITE SENTENCE in the book?

For a university project I am compiling a list of sentences from different books. Therefore send me “your” sentence and book.

Thank you for helping!

Hello!, i’ve re-tweeted your pleas fo help and here’s mine. The Book is nineteeneightyfour by George Orwell and the line (first line if i remember correctly) is.’It was a cold dark day in april, and the clocks were striking thirteen.’

    Good luck!

    From Kipling’s “Kim”:

“Who hold Zam-Zammah, that ‘fire-breathing dragon’, hold the Punjab, for the great green-bronze piece is always first of the conqueror’s loot.”

    Hi Susanne,

Mine is from Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks:
“Names came pattering into the dusk, bodying out the places of their forebears, the villages and towns where the telegrams would be delivered, the houses where the blinds would be drawn, where low moans would come in the afternoon behind closed doors; and the places that had borne them, which would be like nunneries, like dead towns without their life or purpose, without the sound of fathers and their children, without young men at the factories or in the fields, with no husbands for the women, no deep sound of voices in the inns, with the children who would have been born, who would have grown and worked or painted, even governed, left ungenerated in their fathers’ shattered flesh that lay in stinking shellholes in the beet-crop soil, having left their homes to put up only granite slabs in place of living flesh, on whose inhuman surface the moss and lichen would cast their crawling green indifference.”

Difficult one Susanne. Too many books to choose from.

All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. George Orwell, “Animal Farm” ?

Since Paul got to 1984/Orwell first,

I’ll choose ‘The Godfather’ by Mario Puzo.

So many sentences, the part when the Don gives lighting strike speech to the heads of the 5 families on his return from Sicily. Luca Brasi’s death “sleeps with the fishes.” Or when Michael meets Apollonia and is hit by the ‘bolt’.

Too many! have to find the book.

    RT done.

Thanks a lot for RT! Yeah, I know that there are too many but this is the challenge… Random selection maybe? If that does help.

Couldn’t find my copy of Godfather, so here’s another favourite book.

    from, Dubliners
    – The Dead.

“I know all too well how love can touch your existence for the briefest of hours, yet linger like an apparition the entirety of your days upon the earth. I would not surrender the haunting for all the riches of the world….

    James Joyce
